One party seems positive and the other is more sinister. Nick is playing piano at both parties and he is led away by someone at the X-max party and led away by someone at the masked party (while wearing a blindfold…again, eyes wide shut).
Then the Christmas party is an exact inversion of the Masked party. But they are not focused on the child who is (depending on what you believe) allegedly kidnapped. Tom and Nicole have a good connection and she says something like “we’re awake now”. The child is in the arms of the babysitter safe. In the beginning Nicole Kidman’s asks Tom Cruise how she looks and Tom says she looks good without even looking (hence “eyes wide shut”) they are just going through the motions and not even really aware of each other and don’t have a strong connection. Then I realized the beginning of the movie is an exact inversion of the ending of the film. when I first watched the beginning I thought ‘why would Kubrick even show this part?’ (Tom and Nicole getting ready for the party) It’s a pretty boring scene and why wouldn’t Kubrick just start the movie with them entering the party? One thing I noticed about the beginning of the film. I know there’s a lot of different theories, theories about kidnapping, theories about the 24 mins that were cut, etc. It is my favourite film of Kubrick's.Just watched the movie (a few times). Often, Eyes Wide Shut even borders on Lynchian weirdness and unsettling dream-like sequences. It channels, studies and explores every element of the psychology of sex ranging from the stark, desperate and horrifying to the playfully mischevious fantasy.
The music ranges from reversed chanting to Chris Isaak and meanders in sync with the tone of the film. It's definitely Kubrick's most NSFW picture in my opinion even more severe in its images than A Clockwork Orange. Nicole Kidman is great in a supporting role whilst Tom Cruise is good, but comletely overshadowed by Kubrick's artistry at play and Cruise seems like he's straggling slightly in performance at times. Eyes Wide Shut explores sex, infidelity, marriage, humilation, deviance and other topics personally I think the main theme of the film is want - the want to wear a mask and the want to take off one's mask. Kubrick's last and massively underrated motion picture reaps tiny seeds of its climax from the get go.
